A safe can look substantial, have a heavy door and a digital lock, yet still offer only basic protection against a determined attack or a serious fire. The label is where the real comparison begins. Knowing how to read safe ratings helps you separate a suitable security product from one that merely looks secure, and gives you a clearer basis for protecting cash, documents, firearms, keys and business assets.
Safe ratings are not a single score. A product may carry a burglary grade, a cash rating, a fire-resistance test result, or a combination of these. Each rating answers a different question, so the right choice depends on what you are protecting, where the safe will be installed and how long it needs to resist an attack or fire.
How to read safe ratings without guessing
Start by identifying the risk you need the safe to manage. A home safe holding passports and jewellery has different requirements from a retail till safe, a records safe in an office, or a high-security unit holding valuable stock. The rating should match the likely loss and the realistic threat, not simply the purchase price of the safe.
The three most useful areas to check are burglary resistance, cash rating and fire resistance. Then look at the lock, anchoring requirements, weight and installation location. These details work together. A highly rated body is of limited value if the safe is left unanchored where it can be removed, while a well-anchored basic safe may still be unsuitable for large cash holdings.
Burglary ratings measure resistance to attack
A burglary rating indicates how well a safe has performed against forced entry in controlled testing. Test methods can involve tools, drilling, cutting and attempts to defeat the door, bolts and lock area. The rating is a measure of resistance, not a promise that the safe is impossible to open.
You may see recognised European standards such as EN 1143-1 on commercial and high-security safes. These grades increase as the level rises, reflecting a greater level of tested burglary resistance. The test certificate and the precise grade matter more than marketing terms such as “security safe”, “heavy-duty” or “premium”. Those descriptions can be useful for product positioning, but they are not independently verified ratings on their own.
For everyday household valuables, a quality domestic safe with credible construction and professional anchoring may be appropriate. For substantial cash, high-value jewellery, pharmaceuticals, controlled items or valuable commercial stock, a tested graded safe is generally the more responsible starting point. Your insurer may also nominate a minimum burglary grade for particular values, so check that requirement before purchasing.
Cash ratings are a guide, not a spending target
A cash rating is commonly expressed as a dollar figure, such as $10,000 or $50,000. It is intended to indicate the approximate level of cash a safe may be suitable for under normal conditions. In some cases, the stated figure can be higher for valuables than for cash, because cash is easier to steal, conceal and spend.
Do not treat this figure as automatic insurance cover. A cash rating does not mean an insurer will pay that amount after a loss. Insurance conditions can depend on the safe’s burglary grade, its location, anchoring, alarm coverage, the lock type, the nature of the business and whether the safe was used correctly. A retailer may also have different daytime and overnight cash requirements.
Use the cash rating as a practical comparison tool. If your business regularly holds $15,000 overnight, selecting a safe rated at exactly $15,000 leaves little margin for peak trading periods, seasonal takings or changes to your insurance policy. Choosing the next appropriate level up is often sensible, provided the unit can be installed correctly and suits your premises.
Fire ratings protect specific contents for a stated time
Fire resistance is separate from burglary resistance. A safe designed to withstand forced entry may not be certified for fire protection, and a fire safe may offer only modest burglary protection. If fire is a concern, look for a stated fire test, the time period and the type of contents the rating covers.
A typical fire label may state 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes. This means the safe was tested to keep its internal temperature within a defined limit for that duration under specified fire conditions. It does not mean every item inside will survive every real-world fire. Fire severity, the building collapse risk, safe placement and post-fire access can all affect the outcome.
The content type is equally important. Paper documents can tolerate more heat than digital media. USB drives, backup tapes, hard drives and other data media may require a specialised data safe with a lower internal temperature rating. A paper-rated fire safe is not automatically suitable for electronic records. If you need to protect both, a purpose-designed data insert or a safe tested for both content types may be required.
Look for the testing standard named on the product documentation, rather than relying on broad phrases such as “fireproof”. Reputable fire ratings are linked to an identified test standard and duration. This gives you something meaningful to compare between models.
Understand what the rating does not cover
Safe ratings are valuable, but they do not cover every real installation variable. A rating does not confirm that the safe suits your floor structure, can be moved safely through your building, or will meet your insurer’s conditions. Nor does it replace sensible site security, including alarms, access control, CCTV and careful key or code management.
For gun safes, legal storage requirements are also separate from general safe ratings. Firearm storage rules vary between Australian states and territories and may specify construction, locking, fixing and ammunition storage requirements. Always confirm the current requirements that apply to your licence and location before choosing a gun safe. A product described as suitable for firearms still needs to be installed and used in line with the relevant rules.
Check the construction and lock behind the label
Once the rating suits your risk, review the practical features that determine how the safe will work day to day. Door thickness alone is not enough. Consider the overall body construction, anti-drill protection around the lock, the number and direction of locking bolts, concealed hinges and any relocking devices that activate after an attack.
The lock should fit your operating needs. A key lock is straightforward and dependable but requires disciplined key control. A digital lock provides fast access and can simplify daily use, although codes must be managed carefully and batteries maintained. High-security applications may call for a commercial-grade digital lock, a combination lock, dual locking or time-delay functionality. Time delay can be particularly useful for retail and cash-handling environments because it reduces the value of a forced opening during a robbery.
Also consider internal capacity. External dimensions can be misleading because fire insulation and thick walls reduce usable space. Measure the items you need to store, including folders, laptops, cash drawers or ammunition compartments where applicable, then allow room for future needs. A safe that is overfilled is harder to use and may prevent the door from closing properly.
Installation can protect the rating you paid for
A safe should be difficult to attack and difficult to remove. For many safes, anchoring to a suitable concrete floor or structural wall is essential. Follow the manufacturer’s fixing instructions and use professional installation where the safe is heavy, graded, installed upstairs or located in a commercial setting.
Placement deserves just as much thought. A safe near an external door, visible through a window or positioned in an isolated shed can create unnecessary risk. In a business, install it where authorised staff can access it safely without exposing cash-handling routines. In a home, consider privacy, discreet access and the load-bearing capacity of the floor.
Weight is also a security feature, but it is not a rating. A heavier safe may be harder to remove, yet two safes of similar weight can have very different burglary or fire performance. Use weight as one installation consideration, not as the deciding measure of protection.
Match the safe to the loss you cannot afford
The best way to read a safe rating is to work backwards from the consequence of a loss. List what will be stored, estimate its replacement value, consider whether fire is a credible risk, then check any insurance or compliance conditions. From there, choose a safe with tested protection that exceeds the minimum where practical, and plan for correct anchoring and access control.
A well-chosen safe should give you more than a locked box. It should provide a level of protection that makes sense for your assets, your premises and the people relying on them. When the rating, installation and daily use all align, you are guarding what matters most.
